On August 29th a number of our club Members visited the Little River hatchery located on Edgar and Mary Ann Smith's farm - Beaver Meadows Farm.
The Little River Enhancement Society posted this on their Facebook Page. Check out some of their photos: https://www.facebook.com/littleriverenhancement
Yesterday was a busy day at Little River hatchery, as the volunteer member crew were busy clipping the adipose fins off of the 2023 born coho fry to mark them as hatchery fish. These coho fry will be released next April/May 2024 to mix with the wild coho fry when they migrate to the ocean. The crew was made up of Little River members, with some guest members from Brooklyn Creek Watershed Society, Morrison Creek Streamkeepers and Millard Piercy Watershed Stewards. The day ended with 15,000 clipped coho fry. We would like to thank the crew for a great job.
As well, we had a visit from the Comox Valley Probus Club for a tour of the hatchery and a close up of the coho clipping operation. It was a pleasure to meet people with an interest in salmon and many questions on salmon rearing. #comoxvalley #comox #probus #pointholmesrecreationassociation
