A family's journey with Autism
Feb. 21, 2024 11:00 a.m.
Teresa Hedley is a teacher, an author and the mother of three young adults, one of whom is Erik, 25, with autism. What’s Not Allowed? A Family Journey with Autism is Teresa’s memoir about life with autism.
Erik is a part-time student at NIC and volunteers at Today and Tomorrow Childcare Centre and at the Puntledge Fish Hatchery. Erik was diagnosed with autism at age six. He has been a national autism self-advocate since he was seventeen.
Erik and Teresa will present three questions they are often asked about autism:
1. What is autism?
2. Are there misconceptions about autism? / What does the public need to know?
3. How do I connect with someone on the autism spectrum?
Both Erik and Teresa will answer each question, giving you two perspectives—one from the shoes of autism, and one from a parent supporting a child–now adult–with autism: a “He Says, She Says” format.
In addition, Erik’s visual thinking will be represented with objects drawn from a Mary Poppins bag. You will hear as well as see the presentation.
Following the three questions, Erik will present the speech he gave on Ottawa’s Parliament Hill in 2016–about the power of belief and believers in our lives.

Palaeontology in the Comox Valley
Mar. 20, 2024 11:00 a.m.
Our March speaker is Pat Trask, well known in the Comox Valley for his passion for palaeontology. Thousands of school children and members of the public have attended his fossil tours over the years. He is also the recipient of the Rene Savenye Award that is given to honour an amateur palaeontologist who has demonstrated outstanding service to the science or to palaeontological education in B.C. Pat will focus on the 1988 discovery of the Puntledge River elasmosaur (which was just officially designated BC’s provincial fossil emblem), discoveries made by others in the Comox Valley and on his own recent find of a juvenile elasmosaur on the Trent River.

"The Best Loved Boat"
Apr. 10, 2024 11:00 a.m.
Ian Kennedy is a Comox Valley resident and author of 8 books, the most recent of which is The Best Loved Boat: The Princess Maquina. He will take us on an imaginary 1924 journey up and down the West Coast of Vancouver Island on the BC built SS Princess Maquina. The CPR ship made the 1500 km round trip from Victoria to Holberg, three times a month serving the many isolated communities on the West Coast from 1913 - 1952. The people who lived there grew very attached to the ship and it’s crew relying on them for their supplies, spare parts medical emergencies, news and transportation, becoming so attached to the ship that they often referred to her as “The Best Loved Boat”. |
