Speaker Introduction The speaker today, Betty Donaldson, was introduce by Joan Boase. Her topic was titled “Haiku Highlights of Japan.” Betty increased our knowledge of Japan with many details and slides of her stay in that country. She detailed the differences between a tourist who is fortunate enough to travel, see the highlights and a traveller who attempts to learn about the culture and sometimes actually living it. In addition, Betty spoke of the differences of the two major philosophies of that country being Shintoism and Buddhism, how one being the worship of nature, ancestors and ancient heroes which creates happy thoughts and the latter, being self denial and sad times to enable the soul to reach Nirvana. In summation, Yuko Marton, a new Canadian from Japan,
entertained us with the singing of Sakura, a traditional folk song of Japan depicting Spring, the season of cherry blossoms. Roberta Freely thanked Betty Donaldson for her entertaining
talk and presented her with a cheque to her favoured charity.
